My works seek a synthesis of opposites through medium and technique. The materials used in my paintings and drawings explore the sensuousness of light, transparency and opacity of color, flowing encaustic medium and decorative printed fabrics. These feminine materials are bound together by the flattened picture plane, accentuated by grids.
Grids are a common method used not solely for the organization the structure provides but also for what happens to the grids as they are manipulated. The quiet organization of a grid allows the viewer to appreciate the subtleties of the underlying fabric interacting with the pigment, wax and heat. Grids are a departure point, used to cause the viewer to take notice of the light interaction of color, pattern, surface and texture.
I seek harmony within my work. I like using seemingly unrelated elements and principles to find balance between organization and happenstance. My paintings are systematic compositions. Order juxtaposed with sensuous qualities found within washes and drips create balance between definition and discord.
